Freeport is the second most populated city in the Bahamas after Nassau, the largest city of New Providence Island. Freeport is located on Grand Bahama Island about 100 miles northeast of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Grand Bahama Island is the largest of the Bahama Islands, so it is home to more miles of secluded tropical beaches.

While Freeport of Grand Bahama Island is a relatively new city, its land has a rich history going back centuries. Located east of the Florida coastline, the island was originally inhabited by the Siboney, who were eventually driven away from the island and forced to find havens in Cuba and Haiti.
